LDN Insiders: Sid Motion, Artistic Programme and Communications Manager for Photo London

What makes London great are the people within it, the workers, the creatives, the business leaders and the professionals. This is the first interview of our LDN Insiders series, looking at the work and lifestyles of the figures that make up our beloved city.


Our first interview is with Sid Motion who is the Artistic Programme and Communications Manager for Photo London & Director of Sid Motion Gallery.


How did you find your current job?


I heard about Photo London before they were about to launch the first edition in 2015, and I thought it would be wonderful to be part of a movement to bring photography to the fore in the art world, so I contacted them. I was pleased to join to work on the Public Programme, where I have already been lucky enough to work with some world class artists and contribute to some great exhibitions. 

What do you love most about your job?

Having trained as an artist myself, I love that I get to work directly with artists and photographers. Working for an art Fair gives me the freedom to explore my passions for galleries and all forms of artwork. I am setting up my own gallery, which will open in June of this year. After years of planning and trying to find the right space, I have found a wonderful space in Kings Cross. My first exhibition will be a group show of young contemporary artists, painting and sculpture mostly - so it's great to be able to explore these passions, visit artists in their studio, and talk about the production of new work.

If you could only eat at one London restaurant for the rest of your life, which one would it be?

Nopi. I love Ottolenghi’s food, and I could eat it every day!

Do you have a local stomping ground?

I’m a Camden girl through and through!

What to do love about working in Somerset House?

I love being in an environment where there is always something creative happening. From world class exhibitions and performances to all the new studios filling up with creative enterprises, it's the perfect place to be! It's wonderful to feel this connected to a beautiful, historic building in the heart of the city.

Any tips for new Londoners?

Get lost, it's always the back streets I enjoy most!
