London A to Z: Art

Welcome to our first in a series of posts that will chart the almighty pillars of London life from A to Z; and with the exciting things to come this summer it seems apt to start off with Art.

As Londoners we are blessed with a plethora of institutions hosting everything from the Old Masters to the latest in contemporary art, all easily accessible without needing to pay a fee most of the time. 

The opening of the Tate Modern extension has had everyone in a buzz with the new Switch House boasting 360° views of London and more room for performance art, social areas and Modern's expansive collection.

On the subject of the Tate Modern, their retrospective on the artistic juggernaut, Georgia O'Keeffe is unmissable; being the first appearance of her work in any public UK art gallery.

July will be a bumper month of art events with London Art Week, Brown's London Art Weekend, the ICA's exciting Art Night London, and Open Art Spaces taking place throughout the city.

Highlights of Brown's London Art Weekend include, the RA Burlington Gardens Festival, Sophie Ryder in Residence at Hignell Gallery, David Hockney's early prints on show at the Sims Reed Gallery and extended views of Hockney's latest exhibition, 82 Portraits and 1 Still-life.

 Art Night London is the equivalent of a late night party for art-lovers. The event will display 10 contemporary art projects in 10 wildly different venues, ranging from London's only lighthouse to a 1920s bank. Make sure you don't miss it!

Throughout the rest of the Summer the V&A have arranged a set of Evening Talks with renowned artists, writers, designers and architects including Donna Karan and Kelly Hoppen.

The annual BP Portrait Award returns to the National Portrait Gallery, displaying the best in contemporary portrait painting. Next door in the National Gallery the exhibition Painter's Paintings is also on, giving a rare insight into the tastes of some of the world's biggest artists as work from their private collections goes on display.

South of the River, Under the Same Sun: Art From Latin America Today at The South London Gallery showcases 20 contemporary artists as part of the Guggenheim UBS Map Global Art Initiative; acting as the last stop on the exhibition's global tour.

Whatever you choose to see this year, never let it be said that's Art and London don't go hand in hand!
